NO SMOKING DAY

No Smoking Day is coming up soon – on 14th March. It’s a day for people who want to stop smoking. You may have tried to stop smoking before, or you may be thinking about having your first go. Either way, no smoking Day is a perfect time for you to try giving up smoking for good.

It’s very important to choose a certain day to stop…get ready for that day…and go for it. What’s special about No smoking Day is that you won’t be trying on your own. One in five smokers will also be trying to kick the habit on 14th march – so you will have lots of company. Don’t be put off if you’ve tried to give up before and didn’t make it. The more times you try the more likely you are to succeed.

The leaflet is designed to help you prepare yourself to stop smoking and it gives tips for staying off cigarettes.

GETTING READY TO STOP

FIRST, work out when and why you smoke. Do you actually enjoy it? You may be addicted to smoking, or you may use it as a prop. But smoking is also a habit and like most habits, it can become automatic that you don’t even know when you’re doing it.

Use the smoker’s Diary overleaf to work out when and why you smoke during the course of a few days. From this, you will be able to work out which are going to be the more difficult for you. And work out how you are going to deal with them. For example, if drinking a cup of coffee makes you want to smoke, try drinking something else, like fruit juice for a while.

SECOND, work out the reasons why you want to stop smoking. Being sure you want to stop is the key to giving up successfully.

Overleaf you’ll find a checklist of reasons for giving up. Tick the ones which apply to you and add your own. Look back at this checklist once you stop to remind yourself how important staying off cigarettes is for you.
